Syzygy: A NEW YEAR'S CONSTELLATION
Six artists join forces at CWAL Gallery to ring in 2014 by Nick Humez Astronomers define syzygy (literally Greek for “yoking together”) as a conjunction of planets or the alignment of celestial bodies. The Syzygy exhibit brings together a half-dozen stellar artists, opening at 78th St. Studios in the Cleveland West Art League Gallery on Third Friday, January 17th, 2014 from 6 to 10 pm. The exhibit originally was scheduled to run through Valentine’s Day but is being held over! Syzygy‘s closing reception will be Third Friday, February 21st, 2014 from 6 to 10pm and will include the addition of watercolorist Ted Lawson, OWS. Here's the diverse and eclectic lineup of talent: Judy Takáacs (Solon), Leslie Edwards Humez (Painesville), Diane Hoeptner (Cleveland), George Kocar (Bay Village ), Marilyn Dolence (Willoughby), Mike Guyot (Strongsville ), and for one week only beginning February 21st, Ted Lawson OWS (Canton). . Ted Lawson: First thought? Juicy. His distinctive watercolors are brilliantly uncharacteristic of the medium in their fearless use of vivid color, hazy photographic atmosphere (like looking through a wet plate glass window) and unprecedented masculine rendering of his subjects. Diane Hoeptner: Notwithstanding her paintings in corporate offices, limited-edition sales at Saks and art on greeting cards, Diane is unassuming and her demeanor radiates a glow that is the benchmark of her work. She confesses that she is “passionate about floral still life,” but is equally at home doing the feline portraits that have earned her kudos from their owners. Judy Takaács: Judy’s portraits work. She has seized on this familiar genre in a spectacularly different way, rendering super-realistic, ultra-candid likenesses that capture the expression, features, flab, and all the flaws and character of her models with an unsentimental and piercing eye. George Kocar: George’s edgy and sometimes politically incorrect ideas play out through his use of uninhibited acrylic color and fantastical human forms that dance their metaphoric danse with the visual freedom generally reserved for dreams. His images are packed with puns, irony and an enviable right-brained sense of humor. Marilyn Dolence: A photographer of great talent and sensitive insight, Marilyn is contagiously enthusiastic about (but not limited to) x-ray photography, a process that results in delicate, ethereal images such as the intact geometrical interior of the chambered nautilus. A world traveler, she has documented landscapes, wildlife and local color; Syzygy will present a sampling of her images which are as thoughtful as they are rare. Mike Guyot: From Big Ben and Boston brownstones to Paris and California’s painted ladies, Mike zeroes in on familiar local landmarks and distills their architectural souls. Before enhancing his work with color, Mike sketches every line and detail freehand which imparts a delicate and appealing organic quality to his artwork. Leslie Edwards Humez: sculptor, photographer, and the curator of Syzygy, Leslie is a suburban surrealist. She visualizes metaphor and word play and translates those fantasy images into startling three dimensional figures laced with irony and wit. Artists in this show were presented with the option of creating work specifically addressing the syzygy theme in its various definitions. But the artists themselves constitute a kind of constellation in their own right, in which personal friendships exercise a gravitational pull, and regard Syzygy as a welcome opportunity to join other artists showing work that is provocatively different from their own. Syzygy will be at the CWAL Gallery until February 21st. He moved to Ohio in 2006, and is married to Leslie Edwards Humez. |
